Community Initiatives

In SouthCentral Alaska, we help coordinate local efforts around food security and conservation, working with a diverse group of organizations and individuals. We have collaborated to assess and strengthen resident’s access to locally grown foods, culminating with a partnership to start a community garden in spring of 2017. In Palmer, we were invited to join the steering committee for the EPA’s Local Foods Local Places technical assistance grant, which led to the completion of a local food systems assessment. Additionally, we are partnering with Alaska Pacific University’s Alaska Tilth, a program bringing gardens and CSA shares to low-income residents of the Mat-Su Valley.

For our annual NeighborWorks Week, we work with communities to animate space, rejuvenate underused areas, increase public safety, and bring diverse groups of people together for a week of community drive projects. In the past we have painted houses and hockey rinks, cleaned up parks and more throughout Anchorage, Palmer, and Wasilla.
